ChatGPT Custom Commands for Writing

My writing has improved dramatically, almost tenfold, in just one week with the aid of ChatGPT. However, I’ve noticed a recurring issue: I often need to rephrase the same sentences repeatedly to convey my precise intentions and maintain my personal writing style. Without this clarity, ChatGPT will go crazy and produce overly complex sentences. This repetitive process has been quite bothersome. Therefore, I developed these commands to save time and typing energy for future writing. I’ve found them quite handy and would like to share them with others.

ChatGPT Custom Commands for Writing

Here’s a collection of useful commands to help us save time and communicate effectively with ChatGPT when writing quality articles.

I’d like to simplify lengthy text into commands, making communication more concise. Here’s a list of custom commands, all starting with a ‘$’ sign and being case-insensitive:
$content: “<TEXT>”:
Save the <TEXT> in quotes into a variable (let’s name it <VAR_CONTENT>) in memory. We’ll carry out operations using my custom commands. Upon receiving the “$content” command, inform the user that the content is saved into <VAR_CONTENT>.
$current:
Output the most recently updated content from <VAR_CONTENT>.
$improve:
Improve the English in <VAR_CONTENT> by using everyday language and avoiding overly formal or complex terms. Then output the updated content to the user. And also explain why you made such changes for the user’s study purposes.

$check:
Check and correct the English grammar and uncommonly used phrase in <VAR_CONTENT>, maintaining the original content as closely as possible without making unnecessary changes. Then output the updated content to the user and provide brief explanations for grammar corrections to help the user understand for study purposes.
$suggest:
Provide alternatives for the word or text I provide following, listed in a list format. If I input “$suggest-{number},” give {number} alternatives instead of 5.
$explain:
Followed by a word or phrase, explain why you add, remove, or replace it.
$apply-{number}:
I’ll choose option {number} from the suggestions above. Please apply this chosen text back to <VAR_CONTENT>.
$replace:
Substitute one word or phrase with another in <VAR_CONTENT>.
$delete:
Remove a portion of <VAR_CONTENT>.
$summarize:
Condense <VAR_CONTENT> into a shorter version.
$undo: Restore <VAR_CONTENT> to the previous version.
$split: Divide <VAR_CONTENT> into smaller sections.
$clear:
Disregard our conversation so far, reset <VAR_CONTENT> to NULL, and start a fresh new conversation. After you receive this “$clear” command, please notify the user that the content has been reset in <VAR_CONTENT>.
Additional: Please avoid outputting text in code panels for better readability.

Please list out a brief list of commands to help user to start.
